Gear Up & 826: Between Their Name and Our Logo, It Seemed Like a Good Idea to Join Forces

Are you guys familiar with Eastern Michigan University’s Gear Up program? Funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Gear Up’s mission is to help students in Wayne Westland, Ypsilanti, and Willow Run school districts attend college. Gear Up works with the same class of students (Class of 2012) from seventh through twelfth grades. The program includes tutoring, mentoring, college visits, weekend programs, and summer camp.

We come in on that last one. This summer, 826michigan has agreed to teach daily writing workshops at their June summer camp. We are embarking on the second part of our two-week jaunt. Week one: call it a success. Led by one of our amazing, fearless interns, Ellen, the students were treated to a number of creative, mindboggling, and thought-provoking writing exercises centered around the theme of “the future.” From fiction to haiku to everything in-between, the students astounded us with their thoughts on all things upcoming.

We look forward to working with our second group of students this week, and are excited about this new partnership with Gear Up!
