We Both Had Gears in Our Logos, So We Went from There …

Happy August! Good afternoon! Some of you may know that we have been working with Eastern Michigan University’s GearUp program for the last two summers. The program’s function is to help students in Wayne Westland, Ypsilanti, and Willow Run School Districts attend college. We’re down with that. And so we are always more than happy to supply the writing portion of their summer camp.

This summer, superintern Nicole Premo, supertutor Brent Courson, and superdesigner Ben English taught several weeks’ worth of workshops to the sixty or so soon-to-be ninth graders in the program. What came out of it? The Student Journal, an eight-page newspaper, written entirely by GearUp participants under the guidance of these amazing volunteers. Covering everything from politics to a snake attack to sports to autism to entertainment to school food to the environment and beyond, The Student Journal makes you think, makes you laugh, and might even get you a little choked up.

Look for copies of The Student Journal around town, or stop into the Liberty Street Robot Supply & Repair any time to pick up a free copy of this impressive publication!

Ben, in addition to helping teach the
workshops, did a great job with the design.

Many thanks are, as usual, in order! Thanks to our wonderful volunteers: Nicole, Brent, and Ben, we (obviously) couldn’t have done it without you. Thanks to Jody O’Neill at GearUp! And many thanks to Grand Blanc Printing, Inc., for donating the printing of this fine looking newspaper!

The biggest thanks, always, are reserved for the hilarious and intelligent students that we were so fortunate to get to work with again this year. Thanks for adding your insights to the paper. We really enjoyed reading them!
