A Force of Goodness: August’s Volunteer of the Month is Megan Gilson!

We have so much to say about Megan Gilson.

When Megan began her undergraduate journey at the University of Michigan, she planned to study neuroscience. Very quickly, however,  she realized that the way she most wanted to help people was to teach! She is currently in her final year of studies at the University of Michigan in the School of Education.

Megan has interned at 826michigan four semesters, helping two summers in Detroit, Ypsilanti, and Ann Arbor. She has been an all-star workshops intern for two semesters, and compiled hundreds of pieces of student writing for publication with delight. She finds true joy in reviewing student work. Her genuine love of learning and working with young people is evident in everything she does for 826michigan–which, by the way, is everything.

In addition to interning, Megan has helped us as a: field trips volunteer, Liberty Street tutor, in-school residency volunteer (where she was an integral part of the Adams Writing Club), workshops leader (designing STEM classes for young students and college prep classes for older students), Camp Michitanki Story Studio Coordinator and workshops leader (leading on-site workshops for one full week and then preparing student work for publication), and regular events volunteer and participant. Meanwhile, she balances a full schedule of classes and work. Whew! Megan does all of this and makes it look so easy.

Megan Gilson is an awesome force teaching us how to have an awesome impact in the world.

Thanks, Megan, for your supportive and generous ways with students and volunteers alike. We are grateful for your service and look forward to welcoming your students one day on a field trip!
