Comcast Foundation

The snow has melted (well, it did for a day or two), spring is on its way, but its always After-School Tutoring season at 826michigan! Monday through Thursday in Detroit, Ann Arbor, and Ypsilanti, students shrug off their jackets, say hey to their tutor, grab some string cheese, and crack open their books. Whether they’re calculating algebra equations, practicing spelling words, or penning essays on Toni Morrison for Black History Month, students are hard at work.  We are so thankful to the generosity of the Comcast Foundation for helping us reach hundreds of students this year with a $10,000 grant to support After-School Tutoring.

This grant from the Comcast Foundation is in recognition of Comcast’s commitment to the communities where its customers and employees live and work. Since its founding in 1999, the Comcast Foundation has distributed more than $163 million in cash support of programs implemented locally in Comcast communities that expand digital literacy, promote community service and build tomorrow’s leaders.

It’s a joy each year watching our students get their homework done, gain confidence, and hone their literary talents. And homework isn’t all we do! Last semester, students in our cities wrote to each other, made videos showing each other their tutoring labs, and had the opportunity to speak to each other over Skype. This semester, our traveling journals are flying back and forth between our labs, filling up with important questions, like, “If you could change one thing about your city, what would it be and why?” and important answers, like a Detroit theme park with a roller coaster shaped like the Ambassador Bridge.

We are so grateful to Comcast for believing in 826michigan’s mission to provide After-School Tutoring. We celebrate Comcast Foundation as our March Supporter of the Month. Thank you for all that you do!
