Thanks and Have Fun Running the Country

A few days after the election of Barack Obama, kids from all the 826s around the country were asked to provide advice and guidance to their new president. The results were, as you might expect, heartfelt and hilarious. We loved them so much, in fact, that McSweeney’s compiled the letters in a new book called Thanks and Have Fun Running the Country. In this collection of letters to President Obama, there’s loads of advice for the president, from the outrageous (snowcones for everyone!) to the practical (houses for the homeless).

Here’s an example, from Chandler Browne in Chicago:

The first ten things you should do as president:

  1. Fly to the White House in a helicopter.
  2. Walk in.
  3. Wipe feet.
  4. Walk to the Oval Office.
  5. Sit down in a chair.
  6. Put hand sanitizer on hands.
  7. Enjoy moment.
  8. Get up.
  9. Get in car.
  10. Go to the dog pound.

You can find Thanks and Have Fun Running the Country for sale in Ann Arbor’s very own Liberty Street Robot Supply and Repair. Remember our now-pretty-much-famous student Bushra, who just read her letter on This American Life? Her letter is in the book as well. If you’re lucky, she might just sign a copy for you.
