October 2016 will forever stand as one of our favorite months in the entire history of 826michigan because it’s the month when we FINALLY got to cut the ribbon to the Detroit Robot Factory! It’s no secret that we’re thrilled about it, as evidenced by our talking about it HERE, and our friends writing about it HERE and HERE, but we have to admit—it’s nothing we’ve done all by ourselves. A ton of amazing volunteers, stupendous donors, and superb community partners have made our second permanent center possible.
This outstanding October, we are delighted to acknowledge the fabulous folks of Google Ann Arbor for all they do to support 826michigan’s work across the region, and their significant contribution to the opening of the Detroit Robot Factory. The fact is, Google Ann Arbor has donated SO VERY MUCH FURNITURE to the Detroit Robot Factory. That’s tables and chairs and bookcases to get our staff offices set up, plus tables to start furnishing our student writing and tutoring lab, PLUS entire storage cabinets to hold the phenomenal writing of our students (as it waits for you to come and purchase copies of it for your at-home library). Their contribution has gotten us well on our way to get the Detroit Robot Factory ready for our students!
But dear friends, Google Ann Arbor’s generosity doesn’t end there. Way before they cleared out an entire office for our Detroit students, they whisked down the road from their corporate suites in downtown Ann Arbor to Liberty Street Robot Supply and Repair for some direct volunteering in the writing lab! Our local Googlers cleaned and organized our beloved dungeon (where Dr. Blotch keeps all the best robot writing supplies), and prepped chapbook after chapbook for their student authors. Beyond that, several Google Ann Arbor employees have chosen to support 826michigan with regular monetary gifts that Google then matches, dollar for dollar, doubling the impact of each employee donation. Google’s investment in 826michigan’s work and the creative development of our students has made a true difference. We are grateful for their continuous sharing of time and treasures to support our students and their growth.
