Chrissy Deiger!
What we want you to know, first off, about Chrissy Deiger, is that she is very tiny. Pocket-sized, in fact. Secondly, we want you to know that she has many names, but Chrissy Deiger seems to be the one she’s (finally) settled on. Third, she and her husband have a puppy named Charlie. It turns out that he’s half Great Dane, so he is, at one year, almost as big as she is.
Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, we can talk about the many, many things she’s done for 826michigan. And here’s a teaser: we are saving the best part about Chrissy for last.
As far as diversity goes, few volunteers have contributed to as many different programs as Chrissy, and this is, largely, why we chose her for Volunteer of the Month. She can do pretty much anything. Chrissy started tutoring for us a few years ago. Since that time, she has taught a number of workshops—including How Would You Describe the Ocean to a Blind Man—and facilitated workshops as well. She volunteers once a week in our store, the Liberty Street Robot Supply & Repair. She taught several in-school workshops last year, including a series of personal narrative workshops, which resulted in one half of our latest publication (which she wrote the preface to), Tall Tales & True Stories. Furthermore, this summer, she planned and implemented a fundraiser, our first Silent Art Auction. Even better, it was a huge success.
In fact, the only program she hasn’t participated is in the Storytelling & Bookmaking field trip. Chrissy, what have you got against field trips?
The girl is up for anything, and is a seemingly bottomless cup of creativity and energy.
Okay, so here it is: our favorite thing about Chrissy. Not only is Chrissy a super, incredible, oh-cool-look-at-that artist, photographer, and woodworker, she is truly, genuinely a supporter of the arts. If it’s creative and you’re doing it, Chrissy on board and ready to help. She is always working to inspire people of all ages, from the third graders at Childs Elementary to the high school kids who come to 826michigan to our volunteers to any-and-everyone in the community.
And guess what that does, Chrissy? THAT INSPIRES US. So THANK YOU for that. And everything else you have done, and continue to do, for us.
